As I made my trek to the Whiskey Roadhouse, I got a pleasant surprise as I found out that The Violent Hour was the opening act for Steel Panther that night. I was not aware that there was an opening act, let alone one that is led by the one and only Carla Harvey. I realized that this would be the third time that I would be getting to cover a Carla Harvey fronted band.
Having shot the Butcher Babies and Lords of Acid previously. I was excited to see what she had moved onto next. I had heard that she started a new band, but hadn’t had a chance to give them a listen yet. Although, I was also excited to hear The Violent Hour live with no preconceived notions. Just live and loud music played with energy and passion. That is what I thought it would be, and that’s exactly what I got.
The Violent Hour is an all-female group made up of lead guitarist Kiana De Leon, rhythm guitarist Allie Kay, Jewel Steele on bass, and Sasha De Leon on drums. And of course, Carla Harvey on lead vocals. The recently released and EP, which has some interesting collaborations on it, notably John 5 and Zakk Wylde. It is a five-song record that is short and too the point.
A favorite for me on the record and that was played live was Sex and Cigarettes. Another highlight during the show was when they played the cover, Nice Girls Don’t Play Rock and Roll. They killed that song, it made me hope that they record a version of it sometime. Like the EP, the set was short and to the point. A pleasant surprise for sure though. I’m glad I was there and got to hear this band. I hope Carla keeps this band going. They were a lot of fun and the songs are amazing!
