A great night at the Steelhouse in Omaha was kicked off by the Dead Poet Society. The Dead Poet Society has been around for awhile now, over a decade to be exact. I had the opportunity to cover them last year. But they are a band that I knew the least about on this night. I spent some time on Spotify before the show, re-familiarizing myself with their music. There are a lot of great songs in their catalog. I found myself asking why I don’t include them more on my playlists. I ended up adding a couple songs to my list, songs like Uto and Coda. Which I was very happy to hear them in the setlist on this night.
Dead Poet Society have a unique sound that is hard for me to describe. They are not like a lot of bands I listen to. They internet describes them as “heavy indie rock” or “djent pop”. So…I will go with that. All I know is they put on a great show. Both times I have been able to see them, they have not disappointed. Good songs and good energy. They seemed to have a strong fan base on this night, and even though they were the first of three bands, which means they get the shortest set time. They took advantage of the full 40 minutes they were given and didn’t hold back.
They got seven songs to make their statement, and they did an amazing job. Lead vocalist, Jack Underkofler, has a unique style with his vocals. It’s cool to hear a more stylized voice in a rock and roll show. The band as a whole was awesome, bulldozing their way through the set. I feel like they had a good following there to see them, but at the same time, I feel like there were several new fans after they played too. I encourage you to check them out. They have a unique sound for sure. A little different than most rock bands, and in this case different is definitely not bad. They are worth effort to check out.
