The Atomic Bitchwax shared the headlining duties with Crobot at the Bourbon Theater on November 1st in Lincoln, Nebraska. Unfortunately for the bands, it was also one of the biggest home football games of the year for the Nebraska Cornhuskers which took place place just a few blocks away. And to make matters worse, kickoff was at the exact same time as the local openers where hitting the stage. So the crowd was not all that it could have been for these two bands that deserved a better showing.
The Atomic Bitchwax is currently touring and celebrating 25 years of being together. This was my first opportunity to catch these guys. They are veterans of the touring circuit and have passed by here many times. I was excited for the opportunity to be able to cover them. Their reputation definitely preceded them. And with a name like that…how cool is it to say that I got go photograph THE Atomic Bitchwax. They are made up of bassist/vocalist/ Chris Kosnik, guitarist Garrett Sweeney, and drummer Bob Pantella. If you look these guys up online they are called stoner rock. I was always a little perplexed by that description. Maybe I don’t know what stoner rock is…but what I hear when I listen to them is some heavy rock guitar with superb riffs.
The Atomic Bitchwax are a great veteran trio that know how to get a crowd moving. My favorite part of the show is when they played the love gone bad song, “Hope You Die”. I had heard the song once before but to hear them describe it and play it live brough a smile to my face for sure. All three of these guys are great musicians and the songs are strong. I hope I can catch them again. It was unfortunate timing for this tour to play on this date in Lincoln. I would think that on a normal night they would be playing to a good crowd here. I’d love to see that next time they come through.
