Walking into The Admiral on Thursday, October 2nd, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a Gary Numan show. The venue, a converted warehouse with exposed brick and industrial vibes, felt like the perfect backdrop for Gary Numan otherworldly soundscapes. I had heard prior to arriving that Gary Numan’s show was a best of 2024, but having been to about 50 shows in 2024, I found that very hard to believe.  I was wrong.  This show was AMAZING!  With Tremours opening the night, the air buzzed with anticipation for a double dose of alternative edged, new wave, punk-tinged performances.

Tremours, the LA-based duo of Lauren Andino (guitar/vocals) and British native Glenn Fryatt (drums), kicked things off around with a raw, melodic set that punched above its weight. Lauren’s siren song vocals were captivating as they delivered a tight 40-minute opener packed with tracks like “No Invitation” and “Deadbeat,” Andino’s haunting guitar rifs paired perfectly with Fryatt’s solid rhythm, created a wall of sound that had the crowd entranced. It was a smart match for Numan’s tour: Tremours’ lo-fi aggression served as a gritty prelude, warming up the room for what would be an evening of fantastic performances.

Gary Numan emerged like a specter from a cyberpunk dream. At 67, the revolutionary of industrial synth-pop hasn’t lost a step; if anything, his presence feels more magnetic, honed by decades of evolution from Tubeway Army’s raw sound to the brooding, atmospheric sounds of his recent work.  The setlist spanned his vast catalog, clocking in at a generous 90 minutes. It opened with the hypnotic “Halo” getting the crowd to sway and throb to the pulsing beat. The production was immersive: Strobing LED’s sliced through a haze, casting Numan’s apocalyptic attire in ethereal light. He prowled the stage with that signature intensity, his voice still a haunting baritone that cuts through the electronic waves of sound.  Classics like “Down in the Park” and “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” reimagined with heavier, more aggressive arrangements that nodded to his goth-industrial influences. The crowd erupted for “Cars,” with its iconic synth riff, transforming the venue into a sea of raised hands and sing-alongs.

The melodies of Tremours mixed with the harder edged, synth, guitar and bass of Gary Numan made for a show that delivered far beyond expectations.  You absolutely need to catch this tour!
