So, this was my first time getting to see or cover a Nickelback show. For whatever reason, the stars never seemed to line up quite right to allow that to happen. Truth be told, I was excited to shoot photos and review their show. I was hesitant at times to tell others because of the whole Nickelback hate that seems to be prevalent. I’ve never really understood it and never have bought into it. But what I saw on October 3rd proved to me what I already knew. Nickelback is a solid rock and roll band, with solid rock and roll songs, that put on a solid rock and roll show.
I believe there was an arena full of people in Lincoln, Nebraska that would agree with me. For all the hate out there, there seems to be a very strong loyal fan base that could care less what anyone else says. I’ve never believed that your musical tastes should be dictated by someone else’s. If you like it and it makes you feel good, then by God, listen to it. Turn it up to 10 and let the neighbors hear it too.
There were a lot of great moments throughout the night. Nickelback is known for a ton of hits, and those songs got the crowd up and moving all night. Mix in some pyro and lots of crowd participation and you have several thousand very happy Nickelback fans at the end of the night. A unique thing that they do is highlight the crowd a lot through video and photos. You even get a warning before the show starts stating there a good chance you will have your photo taken or you may appear on video. I think it’s a great idea as I believe most fans that go to these shows want to feel like they are involved and a part of the show. Props to Nickelback for making a point to do this during the show.
As I mentioned earlier, there are no shortage of hits for them to play, but they also do a great job of diversifying the set list with new and old alike. For me, it’s just awesome to see an arena rock show that has this type of energy and enthusiasm. It’s really what a rock concert is supposed to be. Get to the arena and forget about all your problems and live in that moment for a few hours. Nickelback provides that opportunity. If you’re with them, climb aboard. If you’re not get out of the way. They aren’t stopping for you.
