I was not sure what to expect coming to a Mini KISS show at The Bourbon Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraksa. I had seen their cameos in movies, tv shows, and commercials. They seemed to be pretty entertaining in those avenues, but what would a full show by them be like? As a big KISS fan from way back, I was eager to see these guys and see what they have to offer. You can’t really see the real KISS guys anymore, not in make up anyway. They are doing their Vegas thing this month, but it’s more pomp and circumstance than about a KISS performance. So, Mini KISS would be my fix.
There was an opener of a local Iron Maiden tribute band to get the crowd warmed up. They were actually a great band, Up the Irons, out of Omaha put on a good show. Then it was time for the Mini KISS guys to come out and do their thing. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they sounded. There were some backing tracks for the background vocals. Nothing too uncommon by today’s standards. Mini KISSS kicked off the show in classic Kiss fashion with Detroit Rock City, Shout it Out Loud, and Duece. They played a number of Kiss classics but had a couple of surprises. They played Home Sweet Home by Motley Crue and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Two songs I definitely was not expecting to hear.
Overall it was a fun night of nostalgia and singing along to some classics. Obviously, Mini KISS are not able to recreate the stage production of the real Kiss, but it’s a good time and the guys genuinely seemed to enjoy performing for the crowd. They had some cool moments like Mini Gene spitting blood, Mini Peter coming out to sing Beth, and then the obvious closer of Rock and Roll All Nite. I’m glad I took the time to come out and see them. It was also fun to shoot the photos of the guys in full KISS make-up.
