Amon Amarth at Steelhouse in Omaha, Nebraska on May 3rd, 2024.

Photos and Review by The Pit Magazine Big Boss, Winsel Photography

I have quite literally been waiting for Amon Amarth to come to the Steelhouse in Omaha since December 2023 when I got the press release they were going on tour! The last time I saw them in Omaha was in October 2016. This year it was for the Metal Crushes All Tour with the support of Cannibal Corpse and Obituary (galleries and reviews soon!). Man! This show was well worth the wait!

In previous shows they have only had the helm of a Viking ship as a stage prop. This time Amon Amarth brought on a full stage set up complete with a drum riser that was on top of a Viking helmet and two gigantic Viking statues. This was the biggest show I have seen them put on and the stage was adorned with the complete Viking layout instead of that teeny, little ship helm as in previous shows.

Steelhouse was the perfect place for this as they have an accommodating stage for bigger bands to play. And they took up the whole stage. They raided the stage with their first song “The Pursuit of Vikings” from their 2004 record “Fate of the Norns”. This triggered the crowd to start moshing and I could hear some singing along with the songs. Johann Hegg’s voice bigger than I have heard it before.

Amon Amarth followed up with fan favorites, “Tattered Banners & Bloody Flags”, and “Guardians of Aasgard”. By the end of the third song the bodies of crowd surfers started to wave over the barricade and the mosh pit got much bigger. I, of course, was grinning ear to ear as I am a huge fan of Amon Amarth. Then they got to “Put Your Back Into the Oar” and damn near everyone started rowing in the air. It was pretty freaking cool to behold.

Amon Amarth is a melodic death metal band from Stockholm, Sweden (although, the Viking theme is strong with them) that started in 1992. Amon Amarth is Johan Hegg (vocals), Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg (guitars), Ted Lundström (bass), and Jocke Wallgren (drums). This is my third time covering the band and I hope it will not be my last. If you like your music heavy AF, then you will dig Amon Amarth and this big ass stage show!
