Alice Cooper and band made a stop in Omaha on the “Too Close For Comfort Tour”. The Orpheum Theater was near capacity for the show. I realized as I was getting ready for this show that this would be my 7th time to see Alice Cooper. My 5th time photographing and covering his show. My first time seeing him I was only 16. It was at Kemper Arena in Kansas City on the Constrictor tour. A lot has changed since then, and at the same time, a lot is the same.
You are guaranteed to see an outstanding show by Alice with an outstanding band. Alice has obviously aged in the 30 years since I have fist seen him, but what you get at an Alice Cooper show is an experience. It’s not your normal concert. It is more like a Broadway production full of actors and props coming through the show.
Alice doesn’t address the crowd at all, until the end of the show when he introduces the band and extras that appear on stage. I love how this part has not changed. You are watching a show, which to me is more than a concert. You still get the loud rock and roll, but also see Alice get his head removed by a guillotine, a boa constrictor, and a couple overzealous photographers meet their demise.
Alice’s band is second to none, with Nita Strauss, Ryan Roxie, and Tommy Henricksen sharing the guitar duties. All very respected players that could be the lead solo guitarist for any band. Then you have Chuck Garric on bass, who just finished filling in for the Scorpions for a few shows and drummer Glen Sobel. Both top notch musicians themselves.
The set list was long, and it should be. Too many hits that need to be played. My highlights are 18, Under My Wheels, Be My Lover, and Schools Out, just to name a few. On this night Alice added a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne and they played Paranoid. A great moment for sure. They ended with another favorite, Feed My Frankenstein. I don’t know how much longer Alice plans on going, but I hope he doesn’t stop anytime soon. I’ll go see him whenever I can, he is a legend and it’s an honor to be able to cover his shows.
