This was a repeat show of one I did almost two years ago. LA Guns opening up for Tom Keifer and his band at the Steelhouse in Omaha, Nebraska. It was so good last time, how could I not want to cover it again? And as an added bonus, Eddie Trunk was the host this time out. Incidentally, this was Trunks first time to Nebraska and so also obviously the first time to the Steelhouse. He was very complimentary of the city and of the venue. Which, if you haven’t seen a show there yet, you should, it is an amazing venue.
As for LA Guns, they absolutely killed it. I am starting to lose track of how many times I have been able to cover these guys now. This is at least my 4th, maybe my 5th time, I have got to see these guys. At least two of the times they were headlining, but tonight they got the call to be the opener for Mr. Keifer. And to be honest, this may have been the best I have ever seen them. They just seem to get better and better. They had a lot of energy and sounded amazing. They were playing loose and looking like they were genuinely having fun.
Let me re-emphasize the part where I said LA Guns sounded amazing. Phil Lewis’s voice was amazing. Time has been super kind to him and his vocals. He sounds very strong and let a scream out at the end of the set that had me standing there amazed. The rest of the band was in top notch form. The legend, Tracii Guns seemingly never stops smiling while he plays and his playing has never been stronger. Ace Von Johnson is a perfect complimentary guitar player for Tracii. A solid player himself, Ace keeps things rolling along through the set. Through in veteran bassist Johnny Martin and drummer Shawn Duncan, and you have a well-oiled machine. LA Guns have gelled as a band after touring consistently over the past several years. They may be from the 80’s but I think some of their best days are still ahead of them.
