For a band that has been flying the flag of heavy metal for nearly five decades, Canadian metal legends Anvil showed at The Foundry in Cleveland that they still have the fire, energy, and passion that made them underground icons in the first place.
When Anvil took the stage, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a nostalgia act. In fact, frontman Steve “Lips” Kudlow kicked things off in memorable fashion by jamming right in the middle of the crowd, immediately breaking down the barrier between band and audience. It set the tone for an intimate, high-energy evening that felt more like a gathering of old friends than a typical concert.
What stood out most throughout the night was just how much Lips still loves what he does. He spent the entire show smiling, joking with fans, and sharing stories between songs. His enthusiasm was contagious, and it was impossible not to get caught up in his genuine appreciation for the audience and the music. One of the highlights of the evening came when he shared a cool story about touring with Motörhead, giving fans a glimpse into the band’s rich history and the experiences they’ve accumulated over the years.
The interaction with the crowd never felt forced. Lips was constantly engaging with fans, making eye contact, exchanging laughs, and creating a personal connection that many performers lose as their careers progress. His charisma remains one of Anvil’s greatest strengths.
While many veteran bands rely on reputation alone, Anvil continues to earn its place on stage every night. Their performance at The Foundry proved that these Canadian metal pioneers still have plenty left in the tank. More importantly, they still seem to be having a blast doing it.
For longtime fans and newcomers alike, Anvil’s Cleveland appearance was a reminder that true passion never goes out of style. The band still sounds strong, still connects with its audience, and still delivers the kind of honest, hard-hitting heavy metal that has kept them going for nearly 50 years.
Simply put, Anvil still has it.
