Sometimes you just need some good old fashioned southern style rock and roll. And there is no one better at it than Blackberry Smoke. They came in to the Steelhouse for the third time since the venue opened, and actually was the first band to ever play there, and gave the crowd exactly what they came for. It was a hand clappin, foot stompin, sing from the top of your lungs kind of night. You can’t help feel good while listening to these guys play.
Blackberry Smoke are currently on their 25th Anniversary tour. They are veterans of the tour circuits and as professional as it gets when putting on a show. Lead vocalist is a consummate showman that knows how to entertain the crowd and keep them moving. And, oh yeah…he can play the guitar and sing pretty darn good too.
Having 25 years worth of material can be daunting, but the guys did a great job of mixing it up and playing songs from every era of the band. And they even threw in some great covers. One being Run With the Pack by Bad Company. The track was part of a Bad Company Tribute that they recorded this past year.
They also mixed in a Beatles cover Come Together during Sleeping Dogs. The crowd loved it! My favorite cover of the night was one of the encores, Train Train by Blackfoot. Another highlight for me was Run Away From It All, probably my favorite song of theirs.
It was a great night watching Blackberry Smoke, and they seem to love Omaha and the Steelhouse. Charlie joked they we all should just move in together at the venue. This was my 3rd time getting to see Blackberry Smoke, and they have never let me down. I will always try and see them when they come through, and you should too. These guys are 25 years in with no signs of slowing down.
