GWAR brought their grotesque circus of blood, satire, and metal to a packed Pageant in St. Louis, turning the venue into a bloody mess for 90 minutes of chaos. From the moment the lights dropped and the opening notes of “Fuck This Place” rung out, it was clear that the night would be a full spectacle. The room was completely packed, with fans shoulder to shoulder and plenty of them dressed in white T-shirts, volunteering themselves as targets for the band’s signature sprays of fake blood and other fun fluids. By the end of the night, no one near the stage remained unstained.
GWAR is known for pushing boundaries, and this show was just that. Plenty of the set took aim at the current political and cultural landscape with the band’s trademark of crude humor and outrageous theatrics. “I’m in Love (With a Dead Dog)” brought public figures with plenty of insults that turned into one of the night’s biggest sprays of stage blood. There were plenty more figures in politics that were dragged onstage only to meet cartoonish violent ends, in usual GWAR manner. Past the gallons of fake blood and costumes, the band delivered a fantastic performance. GWAR dug into their discography including the crushing “Tormentor,” which stood out as a highlight and a nod to longtime fans. The band sounded polished in their iconic messiness.
Per usual, GWAR balanced shock value with a sense of celebration. “Sick of You” closed the night in triumphant fashion, but the crowd still wasn’t ready for the bloody night to end. Their roaring cover of “Pink Pony Club” turned the entire venue into a blood-soaked singalong. It was absurd, loud, and somehow perfectly fitting.
The Pageant packed to its limits proved to be once again the perfect arena for GWAR’s controlled chaos. The soaked crowd shuffling out was exhausted and completely satisfied. GWAR once again and decades in, proved that no one else does it quite like them. The talent they have for creating shock, satire, and sheer volume into something strangely communal is impossible to forget.
