Jesus, music, and people; three of my favorite things in one night. Toby Mac performed at the Texas Trust CU Theater in Dallas for two evenings. His Hits Deep Tour has Ryan Stevenson, Terrian, Crowder, and Cain as the openers. I know four openers sounds like a lot but the overall production was very smooth with not much time between sets. This crowd was one of the most pleasant concert audiences I have been around. Everyone seemed very patient and friendly while offering smiles and space, not all crowds are like this so it was a really nice experience. People of all ages attended, proving that Toby Mac’s audience ranges from small children to seniors. I even saw a couple who brought their newborn and she had little hearing protection headphones!

Ryan Stevenson kicked off the night of worship with Toby Mac and a super simple yet well done set. Crowder took the stage almost immediately after and picked up the energy quite a bit. The background singers were very in sync with their choreography and you could tell the musicians love what they do. No matter who you were watching or where you were looking, they were having a good time. Witnessing a theater full of people sing I’ll Fly Away together with Crowder was such a beautiful moment that a picture or even a video wouldn’t do justice. Terrian performed third with another simple set. I think she used to be a background singer and dancer for Toby Mac and now she is opening for him. If her amazing vocals didn’t have our attention already, her bass player’s sparkly pink bass guitar sure did. The last opener for Toby Mac, but certainly not least, was Cain.

Cain is a band made up of three siblings who love The Lord. I have actually seen Cain live before as they performed at a park in my small hometown a couple of years ago but their stage performance blew me away. Their stage setup and performance in Dallas was just amazing. They had a very 70’s boho meets cowboy type of theme with orange and gold, disco balls and bell bottoms, and their flower light stage props. From slower intimate songs to matching choreography, these siblings could do it all. Cain mentioned their upcoming tour with artists Caleb & John who performed with them. Between Cain and Toby Mac’s sets they took some time to talk about God before the live music continued.

The very beginning of Toby Mac’s show had our attention as he stood on stage in a box made of lasers. His two background singers/dancers  joined him on the peninsula part of the stage within the first song (Lights Shine Bright). The three of them had very entertaining and in sync choreography throughout the show. One of his dancers picked up a trumpet and joined the horn section when they had their moments in the show. The stage presence and crowd interaction was powerful from each individual on stage.

This concert was a beautiful night of worship. Toby Mac opened his set with Lights Shine Bright. He performed some of his hits like Me without You, City on Our Knees, and Til the Day I Die. He closed out the concert with Thankful for You. It was so sweet to observe a large group of Christians gathering to praise The Lord and also enjoy live worship with the mutually familiar voice of Toby Mac and his opening performances. If you are in a bad mood before this concert you will not be when you leave.
