Smokey Robinson in Omaha, Nebraska on April 22, 2017 with The Omaha Symphony.
Smokey Robinson performed at The Holland Performing Arts Center with The Omaha Symphony on April 22, 2017.
Most times concert photographers cover rock and roll bands because they move fast and have monstrous moves and screaming guitars that their audience can see and feel. I fall into that category as well. BUT, there are times when rock and roll music has a cool and mellow side to it. These opportunities are not as frequent, but just as valuable to me as it give the opportunity to create more artistic photos of the performers (The best of my photos can be found on my portfolio HERE). The fine folks with The Omaha Symphony provided me one of those opportunities with Motown legend Smokey Robinson.
Before I get started with Smokey Robinson. Omaha’s Symphony Orchestra started the night with with Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to West Side Story. I love the symphony here. The symphony is not a photographic experience, but what a great sound to my ears. If I could, I would spend my nights at The Holland listening to the symphony. The room is great and quite pleasing to all of the senses. Go see your local symphony sometime.
Smokey Robinson is one of my favorite performers, his voice is still smooth as it was when he hit the charts nearly 50 years ago. He sauntered onto the stage for his first song Being With You and spent a little time dancing with part of his traveling band. The second song in the set was I Second That Emotion in which Smokey Robinson interacted with the audience and encouraged them to sing along. The third song, and my final of the night, was a cover of The Miracles, You Really Got A Hold On Me.
My only wish is that I would have been able to stay and watch the entire set as it included Ooh, Baby, Baby, The Tracks Of My Tears, and A Temptations medley of The Way You Do The Things You Do, Get Ready, & My Girl.
My time with Smokey Robinson is one that I will carry with me for quite sometime.
