Dogstar made a stop on their current tour in LaVista, Nebraska at The Astro Theater. I was excited to cover this show because of…well…I think everyone knows who the famous actor bass player that is in the band. I figured I’d just throw this out there now and address it. I mean, how can you not?
Keanu Reeves is a living legend in the acting world. From Bill and Ted to John Wick and everything in between. I think it’s safe to say that many of the fans in attendance that night where there to see Mr. Reeves. And that’s ok, I mean, I am for anything that promotes music and especially in my state. It is cool seeing someone who has established himself in one art showing that he isn’t just a one dimensional artist. The capacity crowd at the Astro seemed to eat the whole thing up. They were excited to see the movie star on stage.
So, with all that being said, Keanu Reeves is a great musician. Dogstar has been around for quite a while now. And if they weren’t a good band I believe the novelty of having a famous bass player would have worn off a long time ago. But the truth is, they are all solid musicians and play some great rock and roll songs. As a three piece band, there is nowhere to hide. You either can play or not. And Keanu can play! It was awesome to watch and listen to. The other band members are Bret Domrose on vocals and guitar, and drummer Robert Mailhouse. Domrose has a great voice, very distinct and strong. If you only came to see Keanu Reeves you had to be pleasantly surprised at what you were hearing.
Dogstar latest release came out almost a year ago, “Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees”. The set list had a mix of older and new songs, some so new that they haven’t been released yet. They even played a cover by The Cure to open the show, “Just Like Heaven”. It was a great show to be at and I was glad I finally got to see this band. It was worth the effort for sure to get there. If you are debating whether or not you should go, let me tell you now, just go. It’s not music that I have on my playlist, but it was solid music all the way around.
