Underoath took their second stop on their “They’re Only Chasing Safety” 20th Anniversary Tour on Saturday for a nearly sold-out show at The Pageant in St. Louis. To open the show, Static Dress hailing from West Yorkshire perfectly electrified the filling venue. Lead singer Olli Appleyard was a whirlwind of energy running and jumping around the stage for their entire set. The band’s blend of hardcore vocals and pop-punk guitar rifts had the audience jumping along to every song. Their most recent single “Crying” was a fan favorite, with the crowd opening up to a mosh pit. After closing their set perfectly with their biggest hit, “Clean,” Static Dress left the stage having not only warmed up the audience for Underoath but also firmly established their presence as a band. Their performance was a thrilling start to the evening.

Fans were ecstatic to see the lights dim knowing Underoath was about to give them an unforgettable night of nostalgia, playing They’re Only Chasing Safety in its entirety. The set was opened beautifully with  “Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape.” The stage was dimly lit by house lamps that cast onto lead singer Dallas Taylor lying casually on a couch. The audience erupted into cheers for the band’s unique opening. Without missing a beat, they launched into “A Boy Brushed Red Living in Black,” the most popular track from the album. Energy in the venue skyrocketed as the audience sang along, their voices nearly drowning out the band.

Between songs, the band shared heartfelt stories about their early days, reminiscing about when they hoped for just 20 people to show up to their gigs. The crowd cheered as they brought up performing in random bars alongside now-famous band Silverstein, emphasizing their gratitude for the St. Louisians that welcomed them during their rise. Before continuing the show, The band invited a couple on stage. Initially confused, the venue erupted in laughs and cheers as the man dropped to one knee and proposed. It was a beautiful interlude to the night.

Back into their set, a curtain dropped to reveal the iconic album cover of They’re Only Chasing Safety, featuring the woman in the oxygen mask, with glowing lights illuminating her eyes. After a ten-song set, Underoath left the stage as the cheers only grew louder for an encore. They reemerged to perform six more songs. they kicked it off with their newest single, “Teeth.” This song is a completely new sound for the band with electronic synths and new vocal styles. Their fans have responded positively to its sound and are eager for what’s next for their discography, myself included! As the final notes of “Writing On The Walls” faded and the lights came up, it was clear that Underoath perfectly celebrated their anniversary. It was an unforgettable night and a powerful reminder of the impact the band has on their fans.
