The Soap Girls – An Explosive Night of South African Punk Rock

The electric, rebellious spirit of punk rock came alive at Stamps The Bar in Tonawanda, New York on the night of October 11th, 2023, as the dynamic sister duo from South Africa, The Soap Girls, took the stage. Bursting with energy and passion, Mille and Mie Debray gave the audience an unforgettable performance that was a wild rollercoaster of sound, attitude, and punk rock sensibility.

The venue was buzzing with anticipation as the evening kicked off with local acts warming up the stage. By the time The Soap Girls took the spotlight, the crowd was primed and ready for an unforgettable night. The sisters made a bold entrance, wearing their signature attire – bright glittery tops and bottoms with their unique and cool looking make up along with the whole package of the girls. Their image was a perfect reflection of the raw, unapologetic energy that punk rock represents.

From the first chord, The Soap Girls had the crowd in the palm of their hands. They unleashed a torrent of punk rock anthems, along with some new tracks off their newest cd titled “ In My Skin” with their bigger hits “Breathe” and Psycho” which had the entire venue pulsing with energy. The sisters’ powerful vocals and unrelenting guitar riffs fueled the fervor of the audience, and it didn’t take long for the crowd to erupt an a little moshing.

The Soap Girls are known for their socially conscious lyrics, and they didn’t shy away from using their platform to address important issues. Between songs, they spoke passionately about topics like feminism, inequality, and the state of the world. It was evident that they were more than just punk rockers; they were advocates for change and empowerment.

Throughout the performance, the connection between the sisters was palpable. Their harmonious yet fierce stage presence created a captivating dichotomy that held the audience spellbound. Mie’s shredding guitar skills and Mille’s funding the bass showcased their musical prowess, while their energetic personalities and interplay with the crowd made the show feel intimate and personal. The girls are definitely one class act with how they are with their fans and just their personalities alone says it all.

After their performance the girls came off stage to greet all of their fans and take selfies with them and autograph the merch. I bought their newest cd and had them sign it for me. I have listened to it twice just since yesterdays concerts. It is an awesome cd. I also have to give a lot of credit to their manager Sam Debray for all of the amazing ideas behind their music videos. Their YouTube page is just full of videos and more videos for days to watch. So creative, unique but so simple. They definitely tell the stories and show the girls personalities. Great job Sam.

The Soap Girls’ performance at Stamps The Bar was a sonic assault on the senses, an evening filled with rebellion, emotion, and punk rock’s unyielding spirit. The Debray sisters showed not only their musical talent but also their commitment to using their art to address important social issues. It was a night of punk rock that left a lasting impression and, undoubtedly, left the audience craving more of The Soap Girls electrifying sound. If you ever get the chance to see them live, don’t miss it; you won’t be disappointed.
