Them Evils – Rollin’ Stoned and Livin’ Free – Record Review

By Vince Andreasen

Them Evils is a rapidly rising power trio born in Vegas and now residing in Southern California.  Their new single Got Me Rockin debuted on Loudwire and is quickly gaining traction on hard rock streaming service playlists.  The band is currently wrapping up a tour with Red Sun Rising, and will soon headline clubs across America.  These guys are road warriors and have previously shared the stage with bands like The Pretty Reckless, Alter Bridge, and Zakk Wylde’s Zakk Sabbath.

Rollin’ Stoned and Livin’ Free is a 6 song EP that sounds instantly familiar.  They successfully blend elements from Zeppelin, Queens of the Stone Age, AC/DC, The Black Crowes, and every rocking band in-between, then southern-fry this mixture with grit and attitude.   This EP is well produced by Kato Khandwala (The Pretty Reckless, Blondie, Drowning Pool) and has a raw essence that makes it feel like it was captured live.

It opens with lead off single Got Me Rockin with infectious riffs and a chorus that will have many crowds singing along.   Their captivating hooks span across the entire recording.  She Got Nothing provides a chunky guitar lead that immediately gets your toe tapping.  Get’s Me High continues their trend of providing a driving rocker with a strong sing-along chorus.  Untold uses a fuzz-box on the guitar with a straight driving rhythm, and has a Black Keys kind of vibe.  The EP closes with Practice What You Preach, my favorite track on the record, which provides the perfect exclamation point to an outstanding collection of tunes.

If you haven’t heard of Them Evils I’m sure you will soon.  Got Me Rockin and Practice What You Preach deserve regular rotation on modern rock radio.  Them Evils are three excellent musicians that give today’s rock scene a much-needed kick in the pants.  This is what rock and roll is all about.  Turn it up and keep your finger close to the reply button.
