Broken Rail EP Review by Bass Clef Designs!

Everything about Broken Rail tells me that I should be a huge fan. I love the genre, the style, musicianship, and even the lyrics to the songs on their self-titled EP ‘BrokenRail’. It is angry yet mournful, exciting yet anxious, and I am 100% positive if I was at a live show, I would be shaking my fist and banging my head to this band, right in the front row. When I first listened, I had these feelings, yet there was still that little voice in the back of my head telling me that I had heard all of this before.

Broken Rail

And that, my friends, is what it boils down to with me and this album. It is great, well produced, and sounds like a hit record. And that, in my opinion is exactly what is wrong with it. We heard it throughout the ’90’s and the first decade of the ’00’s when bands like Disturbed, Godsmack, Breaking Benjamin, and others were burning up the rock charts. Twenty years ago it was new and fresh. Today it feels like a formula some record executive put together from the archives of the ‘Bands that Sell’ file in the basement.

Editor’s Comment:

I listened to the Broken Rail record a number of times. The production and recording are great. During the first time I played it, I thought it was a solid piece of work, but it had a familiar sound and feel to it. The second play reminded me a lot of Disturbed in sound.  The vocals were solid and sounded like David Dramin. There were some great guitar riffs and the rhythm was on point. However, I could not get Disturbed out of my head.

I like this record, but I think I would have loved it 10-15 years ago.
